Pre-College Initiative and NSBE Jr. Membership Information

The Pre-College Initiative Program provides a formal vehicle through which NSBE collegiate and alumni (professional) members can encourage pre-college students to develop interests and skills in math and science.

Who is eligible for NSBE Jr. Membership?

NSBE Jr. is a membership category for PCI students in grades 6 through 12. All NSBE Jr. chapters are chartered through NSBE World Headquarters. A school volunteer, teacher, counselor, or a member of a local collegiate or alumni chapter can act as an advisor to the chartered chapter.

What is the NSBE Jr. membership year?

NSBE Jr. membership is annual. The membership year begins August 1 and expires on July 31st of the following year regardless of purchase date.  Members must renew their membership beginning August 1st of each year.

What are the annual dues?

NSBE Jr. dues are $5 annually, additional chapter and regional dues may apply.

PCI program goals

The National Society of Black Engineers Pre-College Initiative program will lead the world in enhancing pre-college students’ academic, technical and leadership skills in order to maximize their success in life. NSBE Jr. aims to:

Help pre-college students develop a positive attitude towards academic excellence

·         Encourage and support parental commitment to their student’s education

·         Stimulate enthusiasm about engineering and science among pre-college students

·         Raise cultural awareness among African-American youth

·         Provide support to students throughout the college application process

·         Increase college graduation rates of African-American students

·         Prepare pre-college students to be positive, contributing future collegiate and professional NSBE members

How do I start a NSBE Jr. chapter?

1.        The chapter charter process is an online process, no paper forms are provided.

2.        Each chapter must obtain a NSBE Jr. Chapter Advisor and at least five (5) members to charter a new chapter.

What if my school CANNOT start a NSBE Jr. chapter?

You may join as a NSBE Jr. Member At-Large.  You should also take advantage of another great resource and subscribe to The Bridge magazine to get a head start on learning about NSBE and the Pre-College Initiative Program.  Submit your name, address and phone number to pci@nsbe.org or:

What is the Fulfilling the Legacy Scholarship and how can members contribute?

The Fulfilling the Legacy Scholarship epitomizes NSBE's mission statement, and is awarded to deserving undergraduate students. The number of scholarships available is determined by the amount of money donated to the fund by the membership and private donations each year. Your minimum donation of $1.00 can be made by designating your contribution on the online membership form.

What happens when I graduate?

Upon high school graduation, student members are strongly encouraged to continue their participation with NSBE and join a collegiate chapter. 

How can I qualify for college scholarships?

NSBE offers several college scholarships to NSBE Jr. Members who are in their senior year of high school. For more information, visit the PCI programs page and complete an application. Please note that you MUST be a NSBE Jr. Member to receive a scholarship.

How do I report a change of address?

All information changes can be made via NSBE Online (NOL). Use the email address provided in your email confirmation and your password to retrieve data. Make your changes and be sure to save them.
